152x211R case.JPG152x211R headstamps.JPGGreetings.
Can anyone identify this cartridge case and the gun(s) that used it?
Have tried a year or two ago to find out through wk2ammo & IAA forum. No success.
When i bought it i was told WW1 Russian naval. Must say that i have strong doubts.
Case length.......211mm
Rim diameter.....167mm
HS reads......................15 POLTE JULI 1916 MAGDEBURG Sp252
To my eye the rim is particularly small . . but i've recently seen another of these cases
and rim was same (and, in fact, made the case instantly recognisable).
And what does the "15" mean?
Thanks all, Charley

Most likely the Russian 15,2 cm M14 howitzer. 15 would be the LOT number.

Dimensions match pretty well with French/Russian Schneider 152mm howizer M/1910.

Hi
It's seem to be Austrian case used also with german 15 cm shell (found recently german 15cm shell with austrian cases)
I'll confirm tomorrow that

it's is not an austrian case - this one here has a russian type primer and is for the gun mentioned. German made cases for the austrian 15 cm F.H. have a different length and primer.

Hi
Sorry but the cases i've found have this primer and cases are stamped Berndorff (i must compare the length)
and this primer was used since WW1 on long steel german cases

Hi
The dimensions for the 15cm M14 case is 15cm x 22,1cm x 16,5cm Rim.
the primer of the case you mentioned didn't fit in the 15cm M14.

@Doctor: The Metallwarenfabrik Berndorf was a subsidiary of Krupp, they produced for many countries, not only for austria. In 1st WW german cases for captured guns always used original style primers (I guess because original tools were used - primer keys). It would be nice, if you could show the headstamp of your case.

Hi
Yes you're right the berndorff case have not the same primer but the russian case i have is 240mm L x 168 base and not 211mm L and with typical russian marks and 30 mm primer

So there are three cases being discussed here.
First: My case pictured above has a 30mm primer "hole"...152x211R
And the diameter is certainly 167mm , and it isn't cut down. Others exist.
This is probably then, as Moltke says, for the M1910 Russian/Schneider .
Second: M1934 etc that use the 152x240R x168 case. (I had the M1910 also listed here, wrongly it seems)
Third: So the M14 that Moltke mentions has a case that is 152x221Rx165.
Thank you for the clarifications
Charley

According to Finnish ammo manual from 1944 Russian 152mm M1910 Schneider case is 212mm long and rim diameter 167,5mm. Primer diameter 30mm.
Dimensions for Russian 152mm M1909-30 howizer case are 239mm long, rim 167,3mm and primer 30mm.
These dimensions fit in normal tolerances with yours.

Thanks , yes it becomes clear.
Though no-one has mentioned the mistake i made in my last post...
The case for the M1934, M1935, M1937, M1938 & M1943 is actually not the 239/240mm long one.
Was in too much haste LOL
These howitzers use a 152x305R (x170) case.
So that makes 4 different Russian howitzer cases under discussion.

In fact my 1944 dated manual shows 6 different cases for 152mm Russian howizers; 212mm long M1910, 239mm long M1910-30 and M1909-40, 123,5mm long blank round case for M1930, 547mm long M1934 and M 1937, 260mm long M1937-40, 305mm long M1938
