Cutaway model of a ‘Grenade Hand Offensive M3A2’ . This type of grenade is also often referred to as a concussion grenade. The grenade has a cylindrical shape and is made of asphalt impregnated fibreboard. It has a upper half that slides over the lower half. A threaded hole is placed in the centre of the upper half to receive the M206A2 fuze.
The grenade is especially effective in enclosed areas. Although the offensive grenade has no fragmentation, one should take into account the risk of secondary fragmentation (wood, gravel, stone, glass) that can be thrown away with great velocity. One should also be aware that the fuze parts can form deadly shrapnel.
The grenade can also be used as a light explosive charge for demolition purposes.
The grenade uses the M206A2 fuze –which is smokeless and noiseless- and burns for 5 seconds.
The grenade is filled with an 8oz (226 grams) TNT charge.
Total weight of the grenade is 0,96 Lbs (435 grams).
Length of the complete grenade (with fuze) is 133mm, grenade body (w/o fuze) 109mm. Diameter of the grenade body is 52mm.
The design of this grenade can be traced back to WW1 when the Mk3 offensive blast grenade was designed to clear out trenches, bunkers and machine gun nests. In WW2 the Mk3A1 was used. After WW2 it was replaced by the Mk3A2.
All three types were alike; an impregnated cardboard cylinder, except the WW1 and ww2 had a sheet metal top and bottom flange.
