Cutaway model of a Dutch offensive grenade No.17. The grenade No.17 is meant to disable personel around the point of detonation by means of gas pressure.
The grenade body is made of soft pvc and is filled with a TNT cilinder 51 mm in diameter and 71 mm long. At the top and bottom of this cilinder two cartboard filler discs are placed to fixate the TNT cilinder in the grenade body.
The fuze used on the grenade is the Nr.19C/2. The fuze body is made of cast Zamak and has a hole drilled in the length direction to receive the pyrotechnic fuze train. The pyrotechnic fuze train consists of an aluminium pipe with a pyrotechnic delay (black) below the firing cap. Below the pyrotechnic delay the detonator is placed. The pyrotechnic fuze train is fixated in the Zamak fuze body by means of a screw. The spring loaded firing pin is of the mouse trap type, meaning it is swung into the firing cap by means of a rotaing movement. The firing pin is kept into the tensioned position by the spoon, the spoon is fixated by a split pin with a ring.
Before throwing, the grenade is kept in the had with the spoon tightly pressed against the grenade body. The split pin is pulled out by the ring; as long as the spoon is pressed against the grenade body the grenade is safe, as soon as the grenade is thrown the spring loaded firing pin pushes away the spoon which allows the firing pin to rotate into the firing cap and to start the pyrotechnic delay of 3,5 to 4 seconds.
