Hello , just a first question to the forum.

What do the colour codes on the PIAT and 3 inch Mortar bomb indicate?

Mike,

On both the Red ring is a filling ring to denote the store is filled.

On the PIAT the Blue ring denotes a RDX based filling (that I believe was the original intent, but one then had to rely on the stenciling)

On the 3" Mortar the Green ring denotes it is filled Amatol, in this case the 50/50 denotes 50% Ammonium nitrate/ 50% TNT

P.S. From what I can ascertain the Mk I PIAT was filled 808 and would have had a Green filling ring. However, the Mk I PIAT came finished in Service Brown or Green, to make the Green filling ring more visible they added 1/8" Yellow rings either side of the Green ring. It would then appear it became standard on all PIAT ammunition.
