More likely to be one of the 4.7-inch cases, but it has been cut-down by the look of the mouth. The 4.5-inch was late 1930s.

I disagree. This is a 4"Coast gun case for Mk 1 -3 guns Mark 1 case.
Made by RL in 1900 as stated and for Navy use.
These were separate loaded and usually had 3 sets of mouth cut-outs for the case lid and an extended primer/adaptor.

I have seen short cases but yours looks cut-down a bit.
Usually listed as 102x 380R (or 359R). I have seen cases with and without the mouth cut-outs.
The rim is around 137mm. I cannot find my case to measure exactly.

4.7" cases are 120mm mouth and 153mm (6") across the rim so definitely not a 4.7" case although headstamps look similar.

sure there was a post on here listing the lengths of 4 in cases of this era. There are quite a few.

Ron,

Yes, you are quite right; I should have checked my list of dimensions before making an assumption!

My list shows the 4-in case for the Mk.I-III guns as being 368mm long, with a rim diameter of about 140mm, and the subject case has definitely been trimmed to remove the notches.

Roger.
