Indeed it is WW1 German 16 Granatenwerfer. Beside making sure the head is empty you also need to check up back of tail for a propellent charge. Being a spigot mortar in the tail opening there was a shotgun type shell that propelled the projectile off of the spigot. Make sure that tail charge is gone also...Dano
