There isn't any writing on the base? Since it is a separate loading or bag loaded style, I know that 12Pdr projectiles are of this design with rotating band close to the base.
 
my 25pr shot is nearer 9in long and has a different band. 12pr shot is about 8.5in.
 
Thanks for the reply. I take it is a ww2 projectile I now need to find a shell case for it.

Well, that will shurely not be the search for the holy grail amongst shellcases. It's about the most common shellcase encountered.
