Hi Mark,what you have there is a Bathytermograph,it was I believe dropped over the side of a ship and it measured the temperature of various layers of sea water as it passed on its way to the seabed (that is what I was told when I got the one I have,)they are expendable,see pics,so there must be loads of them on the seabed,hope this helps,
