HONOURED MEMBER RIP
After the Civil War,,the defense budget went to the Navy and coast defense works and field artillery was neglected. But in 1878, 57 Hotchkiss mountain guns were purchased from France or built by the American Ordnance Company in the US. They cost $450 each. They were used in the Indian Wars and the Philippines. In the25 years in service, many kinds of rounds were used. Both point and base fuzed shells were used, with 3 kinds of cases and 2 kinds of canister. The makers were Hotchkiss Paris, Winchester, UMC and Frankfort Arsenal. The first guns used rounds with no primer, with a flash hole and primer in the breech block. The guns were sold in the early 1900s and a few were purchased by civilians, and are being fired to day with zinc cast projectiles. The last gun I saw at auction went for around $35,000. Here are most of the variety of rounds, but not all, I am sure.
