I have recently acquired a hungarian 48M stick grenade..I purchased under the impression it was a practice version, however when shaken it sounds as if there is sand inside..is this standard for a 48m practice ?

Yes it does sound very much like sand when it is shaken..also there are traces of blue paint so I am assuming this indicates a practice model,as explained by Chris.
