ID Grenade lighter with some real parts

Falcon

Well-Known Member
I picked this up at a car boot sale. I would appreciate an ID as grenades are not my usual collecting field.

It appears that the lever and striker mechanism are real. The lever is marked "PW MTY 80". The metal ring that the striker screws into is marked "MTY 5"

The body is moulded plastic.

The lighter unit itself has a "Made in Japan" sticker on its underside.

What type and country of origin are the striker parts? Is the body itself based on any real grenade?

Thanks for any replies.

Thanks for the replies. I thought I may as well buy it as it only cost two quid.

I think this was commercially made. The lighter holder seems to have been made to fit into it.

The base is turned and anodised aluminium. It seems too well done to be a one off "trench art" type piece.

There could well be others out there.

PW is likely Pains Wessex, well known for pyrotechnics. The moulding of the fly-off lever, the split pin and ring all look the real thing. It appears to be a relatively modern (within the last 30 - 40 years - fits with the `80' marking) design.
