3" diameter 15.25" high
fuse stamped `Plug Firing Rep N180 Mk M2. C.E Co 1962 with unified thread symbol.
Body has loads of stampings.
Best ones - ¬F17 RA B or 8 TT

Hi Tim
The 3"/70 used fixed rounds.
This has no crimp rebate nor enough land for it to stay in a cartridge in my opinion?

Now you mention it, I totally agree. However, 3" QF separate in 1960s seems very retrograde. Somewhere, I sure I've got a photo of 3"/70 round.

I agree - I had looked at the 70 & did not think it was this proj - hence why I put it here

It is a 3 inch 70 projectile. The case crimps on the rotating band, which is missing!

As you have several specimens, do you know what purpose the groove above the driving band seating serves?

Sorry Tim, I have no idea. The U.S. ones don't have it. There was a post concerning a projectile with the groove, a couple of months back.

Need to rummage now as I think I have a case?
Will get a bit of copper to make a dummy DB!

groove above band could be something to do with locating the round in an auto handling system. The band when fired gets smoothed out but looks more like it should screw into the case which has a thread type groove around the neck.

These two are labelled as follows:

34 - 3"70 cal HE (fired Probert rifling), fitted with PRF SX144A
35 - 3"70 cal HE N6 (Experimental)(fired), with Plug, Firing, Rep Fuze N180

Most annoying, is that behind the two rounds were two cased rounds, one of which was sectioned and I failed to photograph them.
