Is this a projectile, grenade or scrap!?
Cast steel with fragmentation/grip grooves slots
CAV 16 cast in near nose.
105mm tall 45 mm diameter at base hole in base does not have a thread
4 `lugs` 5 mm from base (engage in rifling?) @ 12, 3, 6 & 9 o`clock
Attention, if Hicky 1300 considered it is a shell, the base is the large end of the projectile.
In fact, it's a grenade No 22 and the large end is the head. It's normal that it is not threaded.
The fuze was not screwed in the body but simply placed into it.
Only the small end must be threaded, if the trowing rod is not broken in his hole.
Are you sure, Hicky, that your grenade is empty ?
The base has not been drilled out and threaded for a rod, and neither has the detonator pocket been drilled out (or reamed) to take the modified .303 cartridge (detonator holder). It is definitely a raw casting, and it looks as though it may well be a reject.
Thanks for all the positive & informative feedback/replies.
Grenades not my thing as you can tell
Have done some googling & defo a 22 WWI Brit.
Rod is not broken so looks to be unfinished.
Casting is a bit shabby so may well be a factory reject
