( a letter that looks like an upside down V or an A without the line in the middle): AD. Co. HKF

I was told it might be a naval shell?
 
18 pounder field gun cartridge

18 pounder mark II is for land use in the field gun used extensively during the first world war, if you look in the annuls of this site there are pelnty of references (threads) to the ammunition the guns used.
