Hi,

I am new to your website and find it a fantastic resource with an incredible knowledge base. Thank you to the global community. Can anyone assist me in identifying this shell, it is I approximately 100mm wide at the base and 20 inches in length. It has been painted (by unknown persons) however I would like to restore it to original appearance. As such, any information you could provide in identifying this shell would be appreciated greatly.

Thank you.

M.

If you could give an exact diameter it would help identify it.

There should be markings on the body of the projectile under the red paint.

From the wavy driving band groove it looks British.

4" QF naval round?

Thanks,

i have are removed all the paint and underneath was the following:

SE
10385 YS

4in 35LB N2FA
@ 2/56 47FS

I now know that the shell is a 4" and 35lbs, however what does the rest mean?

2/56 is the date of manufacture ie FEB. 1956. FS is that it is made from forged steel. N2FA is Naval mk2 Fixed Ammunition ie it was crimped in a case.

Wow ow thank you so much, I am very impressed by the knowledge base in this community!!! Last question, how do I determine whether it is HE, AP etc to ensure the correct paint scheme?

Well you know the weight of the round and it is not a SAP round.

Have a look at the base to see if it could be a smoke or starshell round.

Where are you in Canada? There is are 4" guns on Haida and also one in the Naval Museum of Alberta

i am in British Columbia, Vancouver to be specific. I purchased this piece from a local surplus store. There are no markings on the base whatsoever. The base is solid.

nose fuze counts out any form of armour penetrating, at that weight its a safe bet it was HE or possible practice AA which were inert filled with a small smokey charge to blow the fuze out and leave a puff of smoke to show where in the sky it burst when used against target drouges or drones.
