Identification of a possible pyrotechnic device of military origin

Hello everyone,
A quick question regarding identification: I just received a photo of a found item from a friend at another department. Based purely on its appearance, it appears to be the effective charge of a battlefield illumination flare or a light grenade. However, it could also be a smoke grenade. In any case, it appears to be of military origin.
The object is under official control and has been securely stored for the time being.
Nevertheless, a definitive identification would be helpful.
As for the dimensions, I only know that the diameter is supposed to be about 10 cm. However, as I was told, this is an estimate and not a measurement ;)
Any information is welcome.

Many thanks and best regards

As the apparent date is shown as "9 30 43" It's not British.

The eyelet thimble suggests it was suspended by such - parachute flare?

Yes, the eyelet thimble (to protect a strap/leash?) is also my most important clue. The reference to the date is very relevant. So we may even be looking at something -not British- from the WWII era.
I now have an X-ray image that shows that the object has no mechanics or relevant internal structure, but is simply filled. This would also fit in with our assumptions. Letters on the object could help, but there are none :).
Thanks!
