identification req.

do you know what this cartridge is .its about 29.6 (1.16inch) in total length, bullet is 11.5 (.45) diameter, brass case is 15mm (o6o) in length the loose rim is 12.7 (.50) in diameter this is held in by the primer and is marked ELEY BROS. I cant find any info on this ,been trying for weeks. over to you experts. thanks clive

Looks like a .450 revolver cartridge, for the Adams or similar. Service cartridge Mark II (introduced 1877) had a brass base disc, but as this has an Eley headstamp, it is the commercially produced version.

Thanks Justin, i did look at the Adams because its of a similar size, but i cant find any info on the cartridge ,very odd to have a separate rim,
 
The separate base is the early design, before the fully solid drawn case was introduced. Snider and Martini Henry cases had the 'washer' style base. The website by the late Tony Edwards, British Military Small Arms Ammo, will tell you all that you need to know.
