- 30 mm, Height 5 mm. Material: Aluminium. filled with. Bariumnitrat

Also used as the green component in pyrotechnics . Could that be what they were for ?
 
Could the be Railway warning devices,placed on the track and exploded when run over by a train wheel,?

Nah,they look totally different and are colour coded with thin lead straps to attach them to the rails

Agree with smle2009. Here a Finnish version of railroad signal from 1940's.
Is it possible to read the curved print above date stencils? It might bring some light in question.

Gentlemen, I believe the mystery is already solved, it seems to be a part of the Ofenrohr-rocket shown above. :tinysmile_shy_t:
 
Wild guess it may have been Don but the railway signals are interesting things,nice pics Tony.Saw some packaging for sale for these years ago but cant remember where??Tig.

I was selling some of these on SA a while ago for a friend but things went 'tits up',so waiting for stuff to be picked up.
Also had them in blue and green
