watching the news showing Israel using self propelled 155mm guns saw they had what appeared to be 3 types of shell on the ground ready for use coloured white, a pale possible green and a darker grey/green. is that usual? why so many choices to fire at a target? or was the news showing old film of training?

The white are for illumination at night, the dark green HE or submunition HE and the light green are WP-Smoke. Fairly simple since there are about dozen possible projectiles to choose from.

Thanks, confirmed my thoughts on types but thought you would only need HE to destroy chosen targets.

The Illuminating are used to support ground troops at night. The new illuminating rounds for infrared only produce light that can be seen with night vision sights. The smoke rounds are used for spotting targets, smoke screening, and incendiary effects.
