It is solid, so would not be a container for anything.

Thanks for that thought, but no it isn't the same. Your picture is of a brass plug and the square is a tool hole. My piece is for interior use I think as it wouldn't seal a shell.

Looks like a booster container to me. Similar designs were very common on WW2 IJA HE projectiles.

Thanks for your thoughts but as said already, this is solid. I've tried to take a better picture showing the concave top.
