Japanese rifle or handgrenade? Or

genkideskan

Honoured Member RIP
Here is annother mistery ordnance part, in the series of less known japanese Ordnance.
Iam sure Ive seen a pic of a jpn. mortar, mounted on a base plate and loaded with such a grenade, but cant find it.
Now I have it still on my desk, because Ive found a very similar dutch grenade, used by the Dutch Indies Army better known as KNIL. This was a dutch unit, trained for the colonies. ( KNIL = Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indi Leger )
The japanese could have captured these grenades at Java ect... In fact it was a rifle grenade of system Tierie, but it was converted to a handgrenade with longer stick later.

The discussion about the japanese version starts as grenade, shell for flare guns to mortar round. So what is true. Any idea???

Anyone may be has better informations about the dutch grenade and thrower?

dutch grenade

could not find anything in my Japanese reference. but that does not mean that they didnt have it. but i think its a dutch grenade bubba fide by Japanese for their own uses. just my 2cents but what ever its pretty neat.

N.I.L. hand grenade

It is a Dutch Hand Grenade made by the N.I.L. that means in Dutch "Nederlands Indische Leger" In english that will be:

"Dutch Indonesian Army"

Regards,

Chris

Sorry the one on the drawing is the Rifle Grenade version.
There's also a hand grenade version with a much longer steel the body is the same.

Chris

PS: a bit early in Holland so the brain is not working yet.

One of our members has a couple of variations of these which he allowed me to photograph for a handbook, I'll send him an e-mail to wake him up and see if he has a ref.

Hmmmm. looks familiar....

Hello everyone.
I have three grenades like this. I have the exact specimen pictured above. I am including a link to my Japanese ordnance page about this grenade. I had this identified as a Chinese Nationalist Type 28 rifle grenade. It is very similar to the grenade in the diagram. Now I don't know what to think.

Well the body of the Dutch grenade is made of alluminium, so that is ruled out.

Very interesting posts. Any idea about the chinese launcher cup?

BLU are you sure - Ive heard that the Tierie launcher for the rifle was partially made from Aluminum?!

Yes I am sure, we have the grenade in our collection.
Here the drawing and the text.

Unusual Chinese cup launcher Type 28

Here's a link to a page with photographs of the Chinese Cup launcher. This is a reference book being sold by sites owner. This person helped me ID this grenade. I can't post pics from his site but here are the links.

Unfortunately the text is in Chinese. The moment there's an English language version of this reference book I'm buying a copy.

The Dutch grenade is an attractive grenade. Good reference info. Nice. If I were a rich man I could so easily collect European grenades and ordnance...
