I vacillated for several days whether to post this movie or not https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067277/. The movie was made at the height of Vietnam war, I think it is important. It takes place during IWW. I think it is done intentionally, to remove it as far as possible from Nam era, to show that is is universal, not pertaining to a particular time. I can't formulate the essence of the action in one sentence, maybe you can look up IMDB summary. And look at the rating too.
