Latest find: No.23 Mills

Compare the photo's side by side, I think it's the same grenade that Dave took back to the dealer.

I thought it was a little suspect, purely from it's condition, hence the post. The dealer seemed to drop the price quite readily when I haggled with him. I was aware of the other fake No.5/23s with the lead in on the base thread, so I was in two minds over this one. Having never had my hands on a center cast Mills before, I thought I'd take a gamble at 60. Def the same grenade; I bought this on the Friday. It does look like it's been around for a while....then again, that's how it's supposed to look!

Oh, and by the way, I won't be putting this one back into the market place, so someone else can get caught out....Dave.....:tinysmile_shy_t:

If its any consolation this would have fooled me and I am sure many more besides. I think 60 was worth a gamble and I see some repro bits for Mills appear to command a 'good' price. I guess in the end if a price seems too good to be true - then it probably is.

Sorry you were caught out on this one

regards Kev

So this dealer then.......He knows that this is a fake now, as it was returned the last time....and he is still persistant in selling it as original?

Who is this guy?

Cannot recall who it was. Not one of the 'local' dealers, I don't recall seeing him before. Someone has gone to a heck of a lot of trouble to produce this grenade. It's been 'fired' quite a lot, looking at the indents on the top of the base.

We shouldn't be surprised. Dave has seen fakes before (see his website). There are some guys on the Somme making Mills Baseplugs, levers and other bits too. Some of the baseplugs are rediculous regarding dates. However these fakes can be spotted. It was only a matter of time before centrecasts were (re) made. It would be good to hear how they got on with the process!
