Luftwaffe Meldebchse See

Kilroy was Here

Well-Known Member
Not sure if this is the right category, but this item is similar to a smoke grenade, so put it here.

These Luftwafffe used Meldebchse See could be called a smoke grenade, except they had a watertight message compartment to insert messages or I guess whatever was needed to be transferred to a U-Boat or Ship.

Does someone have more information how these Meldebchse See smoke signal-message containers were employed and used???......I think they are very interesting and would like to know more about them.

1. Were they just thrown out of the window of a plane like a FW200 Condor or other recon. airplane that was at flying at low altitude and slow speed?

2. Or....did some planes have a special chute or a hatch to open and insert these into.. to be ejected or dropped out of the airplanes after lighting the fuze??

3. How would the smoke come out of canister once the smoke chemicals inside started burning?? I see no holes for smoke to escape? did it just burn through the top thin crimp seal of the aluminum tube at top? Maybe the smoke came out around the fuze?

4. Were these used mostly for transferring messages to U-boats or ships maybe to "maintain radio silence" or maybe when radios were not working or damaged? or possibly for messages that were too important to be sent by radio??

All i could find...........

Like the
Meldebchse Land this canister is also to be thrown from an aircraft, but has a watertight construction to be used over sea.
After initiating the 1second delay fuze, the meldebchse emits yellow smoke for some 150seconds.
Not to be dropped from more then 150meters altitude

I was hoping for more info also, but maybe no one knows the answers to the questions I asked above.

How about a couple pics of the ones that were given to you? I'd like to see them.
I think these smoke message canisters are a very interesting item used by the Luftwaffe / Kreigsmarine

Yea, me too. I have no clue about use or details of any sort. The "cap" on mine is rusted in place.

Hi, here are two "Meldebchsen" in her Box and the Label for it. Hope this helps.
Best Regards

UPDATE: Horst posted the label pic before I finished my requst. Thanks for that. I do need the "body" label, tho.

Now that I've started a restoration on mine, does anybody have a legible copy of the label?

I got the wingnut screw end removed and cleaned up. I also need to find the little cap for the other end. This thing's gonna look lots better when I'm done.

If Flare were to photocopy a ruler then cut it out and wrap it around under the label's base, then take a series of hi res photos starting at left and working slowly round, 1cm at a time then measure width and height of label, I could produce that label for you ! Finding a font to match that will be very tricky, if anyone does, do let us know !

I made a few years ago replica labels for "Landungsrauchzeichen". I found "Wittenberg Fraktura" being an almost identical font type. You may buy the font from www.fonts.com. I think it was some 25 dollars or so.
Here an example of this font.

Its similar but not quite the same, I have just taken a few characters at random and they all have different aspects. Depends if you want a close match or something of a similar nature.

Correct DBenz, what I wanted to say was that this font was almost identical for my purpose. If we look at German labels in general, despite of that the basic font is the same there are lot of small variations depending on what set of fonts the printer had. On similar items there also may be different labels from different printers, especially if the items are made by several suppliers. As example I have several storage tins for Z.Z.35 from different suppliers, there also are near as many different labels on them, size, lay-out, font etc.
Personally I am happy with a close match as the label will be a replica anyway.
