The LZtZ 17 BM long-delay time fuze was one of three fuzes used in the V-1 missile (Vergeltungswaffe 1). Its function was to destroy the missile in the event that the impact fuzes failed to ensure that no secret information about this high-tech weapon could fall into enemy hands. The fuze was also used in other top-secret bombs/weapon systems. Towards the end of the war, the fuze was additionally used with explosive charges to destroy key targets on the ground.
It can be set to a time between 6 and 115 minutes using a special fuze setting key; the factory setting is 35 minutes. Before use, the upper screw-on protective cap is removed.
Upon missile launch, the ring with the needle(1) -connected via a pull cord- is pulled out and releases the Y-shaped slider(2). When used as a demolition charge, the ring is pulled out by hand. The slider is pushed forward by spring force and releases the safety pin(3) for the clockwork as well as the safety pin (not visible) for the first striker's safety(4). The clockwork begins to run under the force of the clockwork spring(5); its movement is slowed down by a gear train(6).
After the preset time is reached, the setting disc(7) has rotated far enough for the release lever(8) to snap into the disc’s slot. This releases the second safety element(9) of the spring loaded striker(10) allowing it to hit the primer(11). The flame travels downwards through a channel(12) in the housing and is directed into the detonator(13), which explodes the booster(14).
