m1917 n/A German egg grenade mold 1

Pictured here is one of my favorite m1917 n/A egg grenade mold variants. It will be referred to as "mold 1" in the book. The hand grip ring has higher raised "aggressive" teeth with a fair amount of space between the individual teeth. Most often it is found (as is this one) with HWB stamped within a circle on the base. I know this is hair splitting but I am assigning different mold #'s to the different variants of the egg that are out there. I have since replaced the shipping plug with the m1916 percussion igniter (on my avatar) and this would be my personal favorite egg, even above the smooth sided m1917 egg grenade. I have I think 14 eggs in my collection with no 2 the same and will certainly add more as time goes by (the eggs are still generally inexpensive). This with about 100 different reasons is why my book is taking so long. I will try to be as comprehensive as possible.......Dano

As a casual observer I hadn't noticed the differences before and since reading your various threads will pay them much more attention than previously. Its always interesting to read the finer points and why it is great to have collectors like yourself that specialise in a certain field.

Thanks Kev, Appreciate that so much. One thing that somewhat puzzles is that I have never seen this mold variant in practice form. All of the other variants I have confirmed existance of a practice version (painted red with or without holes in body), so if anyone knows of/has one by all means let me know..........Dano
 
mold #2

This one will get assigned mold #2. It has the high raised teeth but the spacing between the teeth is much smaller (Right hand side of photo). This one is found with a mishmash of different makers marks on the base. In general I have found with the eggs that the ones with the more aggressive grip ring teeth are harder to find than all the others.......Dano

By the way, if anyone has an m1917 or m1917 n/A that is "different" than you are used to seeing, i'd sure like to know about it.............Dano
 
m1917 n/A molds 3 and 4

The photo on the left i'll refer to as mold 3. It gets a mold designation not because of the HEH stamping on the side (which is unique) but because of the snout effect where the igniter screws in. Mold 4 goes to egg on right which will cover all eggs that are not mold 1,2 or 3. On my avatar the left egg is mold 2 and the one on the right is mold 1. The mold 4's have the grip ring but are flatter than molds 1 and 2. The mold 3 egg (on left) used to be mine and I traded it back to the collector I had got it from. I'm currently trying to get it back and the price may be dear. This was one I did not want to slip away. Oh well.....Dano

m1917 n/A WW1 German egg molds 1,2,3,4

To simplify the assigned mold numbers of the German WW1 egg grenade they are from left to right
1) mold 1 (pronounced teeth with wide spacing between)
2) mold 2 (egg on right) (pronounced teeth closer spaced)
3) mold 3 (note snout where igniter screws in)
4) mold 4 (covers all the flatter lugged versions)

Here are the eggs in my collection. The one on the top was nickel plated at one time, but has an interesting grip ring.

Oh hell Jan, I think they're all good. I think the m1917 German WW1 egg grenade has to be one of the most recognizable grenades ever made. What a classic. I have recently pared mine down from 14 to 5 and already miss those 9 doubles I sold. But with a mission in mind "I don't mind". moondoggy certainly has a literal show with his eggs which deserves special mention and all the others I say "hell yes". What I refer too is they are still reasonably priced in todays market (unless you come up with one of the rarer igniters) and we know which these igniters are and in the case of moondoggy seeing the m1917 tin igniter with intact cap certainly deserves mention. The rarest igniter of all is the m1916 (made only at the very end of 1916 and the very beginning of 1917) percussion igniter. It was obsolete before it ever hit the battlefield (pretty much) and is only present in a few scant collections (also used on Kugel grenades), this one will never ever leave my collection (see picture). Seeing this thread re-activated (so to speak) has got my blood flowing once again. I sure hope others add to this thread because this is a grenade that "did not" stand the test of time but just about all know what they are looking at when they see one. The varities of igniters used alone in WW1 attests to that. Yes I have started collecting in the "Vietnam era" but will keep so many German WW1 grenades because that is what i've always collected. i have let some good stuff go but kept what in my mind will never leave as WW1 is still my number one love..... Hey Dan,
Interesting comments you made on other thread re the 2 different thread pitches - the m1915 fuse would only go half way into the black one, yet the shipping plug screwed in both no problems........but then there's "grease"!

Also excellent write up on the body variations!!!!!!

base markings

Hey Drew, The LOD on the base of the red practice egg is very common, but the other marking is not. I have an earlier thread which i'll try and dig out tomorrow with the different markings and I think the marking on you black egg is a one I had not previously seen. Will have to check. As little as these critters are they are a defensive grenade and again I think one of the more recognized designs ever. Thanks for showing Drew....Always..Dano

Dano very nice also.I have a question for you,one of my first grenades in my collection was a WW1 German egg,it had a shipping fuse,the interesting thing about it is it had a leather sock,for no better words,I allways beleived it was to keep the static electricty down.Because as you no a lot of the early stuff would go off making the hole shipment to go up.
What do you think?
I no longer have it ,I sold it to pay hospital cost when i first got sick,but I sold it to a good friend and could possibly get a picture of it if you need to see it.

Have anyone seen these fuze before, it's in bad condition but very rare.
The normal fuze is there just for the size.

A most excellent selection of egg grenades and accessories. I particularly like the plate at the back for fast pulling of the friction fuzes.
