m1939 German egg grenade

If I am permitted, I would like to ask why on m1939 German egg grenades are some of the butterfly piece that sticks out by the fuze. Why are some pointing up and others pointing downward. May sound like a pretty generic question, but I have not idea why and am definately curious..Dano

Its a good question dano.
I would guess either for carrying on the belt and/or for rigging when used as a booby trap?

best

digimax, I think the m1917 eggs you were referring to were in my avatar, which is not the egg I was inquiring about, i was asking about the later m1939 German egg shown in consequent posts, although the m1917 egg is by far my favorite, still curious..Dano
