M39 Egg Grenade Strange Markings

Hi All,

I have this M 39 egg grenade in my collection, came mounted on a Wurfkorper 358 LP flare pistol grenade. But it has strange ordnance markings on the bottom.
Could this be: Fake?
Post War?
From another country?

Any help with ID appreciated.

Russell

Hello Russell,
I know I'm very late answering this, but it appears to me that you have a very early egg 39. The 570A is one of the early German numeric codes (later superseded by letter codes). What I find strange is that 570 (later ckd) stood for Concordia-Hütte close to Koblenz. A Hütte can either be a Stahlhütte (steelworks, which would make the most sense) or an Eisenhütte (iron works). I would've thought that these works would solely produce iron or steel, but not manufacture actual items.
076 is what I read as the batch or lot number.
The numeral codes were introduced in the mid-thirties and then phased out by the letter codes in mid-1940. Later, as you probably know, the three letter code and the year of manufacture were stamped there and the eggs had a lug soldered on, in order to ease carrying in combination with a ring and/or for connecting eggs together to achieve more blast. I have a very rare Splittermantel (fragmentation sleeve) for an egg 39 in my collection.
