A question for my friend Millsbomber.
Here is the spares/tools box for the Blacker Bombard, sadly lacking contents and the handles, but otherwise quite tidy inside, and two propulsion cartridges, one for the practice Bombard, one (the smaller) for the PIAT, and what I believe to be the cut down Madsen base portion of a Bombard cartridge. It has a ridge machined inside for installation of the main charge. It is headstamped K 39 MADSEN 20mm and E.S.T.
But how was the main charge container held in place. And is it an early version, or a later version, or were they contemporary but easier or quicker to manufacture. Is it a Blacker Bombard propulsion cartridge at all, or something else?
Alan1.
Hello Alan, thank you for the pictures and asking a question which for once i can answer about cartridges.
if you look at the Masden cartridge head there are 3 indents on the head same as the practice cartridge which keeps the cartridge in the tail section once loaded into the tail.
I think the piat all ready came from the factory ready loaded with the launching cartridge but thats only what i think.
The case on the far left in this photo is the regular Blacker Bombard case, with small indents. Next is a cut down Madsen, just like your photo Alan1, also with small indents. The next three show increasing size of indent. The Madsen cases are trial versions of the regular BB cartridge, featuring extraction groove not necessary for the BB.
