Magnetic bullet cores.

I've been running a magnet over my SAA collection lately, and I'm getting
strong magnetic attraction with three pairs of nickel jacketed rounds.
These are headstamped DWM 10.75 X 72, DWM 9.3 X 62 & Norma 7.7 Jap,
is this quite normal with commercial rifle rounds???

Magnetic

This is perfectly normal if the jackets are cupro-nickle clad steel (CNCS), a very common jacket material in Europe.

Many thanks,Tony,it is most noticeable with these particular rounds,I'm
hoping that a similar attraction with various military rifle calibres I have, has
a similar cause!!!!

Magnetic

With a bit of experience it is possible to tell the difference between a bullet with a CNCS jacket and and AP round with a GM jacket and a core. If you put the magnet to the very tip of a CNCS jacket it will attract, but if you do that with a GM jacketed AP round you will notice less attraction. This is because there is normally a lead point filler on an AP round.

Of course, if the AP has a steel CNCS jacket you are bu**ered!
