Mercury

Question .. why would you add mercury to a black powder filled grenade?

A friend of mine has been translating a Russian book on grenades and found a inetresting snippet. After adding black powder they would add mercury, then more black powder. We can't figure out why you would do this.

Now this was back in the 16th century, so it could be something they thought might add to the grenade, or make the black powder safer.

Any ideas?

Joe
