Hi

Anyone know the length and diameter of a ww1 No5 mills bomb split pin.

I searched the internet but couldn't find the size.

i have an original brass pin on my no5 it is approx 4cm long and approx 3mm wide with both sides of the split pin together

Hi Spotter

I have one like that it looks and feels like it's made of copper. All the mills bombs I have, they seem to have different rings and different diameter pins.

Some have split rings and others have solid rings. Do you know if the original mills bombs had split rings.

I have seen split rings from before the great war, but they didn't look like the ones I have.

Hello Jmmy sorry cant help youany more with this as this is the only mills ive owned that i know the pin is original to it,,mine has no ring to pull the pin out it had rotted away,,i have seen them with several different types at fairs etc but as you know at fairs you cant guarantee if genuine or not,if i do find anything tho i will let you know..spotter

Hi, I have a document here that states the official diamensions for Mills Grenade rings and pins. The pin is 1.5 inches long and 0.09 inches dia. I am not sure if this means both halves of the pin or just one. The ring should be 1.5 inches outside and 1.22 inches inside dia. and made of tinned steel, this document is dated 1919.
It does not state if the ring is split or solid, I have both types in my collection, as well as brass pins too, which I am sure are original. If you think about how many different factories made Mills Grenades, there was bound to be differences in materials and quality etc, especially in wartime, hope this helps, Tony.

Hello Tony and Spotter

Thats just what I needed. I have been looking for this information for ages.
Going by the information you posted, some of mine are original and some must be from a later date.
Thank you for taking the time to reply.
all the best
Jimmy
