Hi just bought this Mills 36M moneybox, nicely stamped JMD&SL 1917 to the body and the base plug is stamped No36M1 ,10-17 , JMD&SL The gascheck is stamped TA&S ,1/18 The striker is cut down so it doesnt interfere with the slot.Does anyone know the maker?[its not on Dave Sampsons site unless ive missed it ] and were these made to be sold in shops [Like some of the big department stores sold German helmets after the first World War ] or is it servicemen making them for their kids? Any thoughts ? Also the slot wont take anything over a 50p so it could suit some of our tight Lancastrian members[Only joking ]regards Dave

Excellent item, very well preserved for its age... However, in this climate, I don't think you will get much in it!

Hi Dave,
nice money box, looks in excellent condition, a nice find.
The body and base plug was made by J. M. Doughty & Sons Ltd, London and the gas check was made by T. Adshead & Sons, Dudley, Worcestershire.
A lot, if not most were official conversions made by the businesses that made the grens to boost finances for the 'War' effort and this started with the No 5. However as there was such a huge surplus after the war, this was one way to use up a few.
They actually made 75131962 Mills grens during WW1 so there were a few left over.
Anyway, a nice gren, thanks for showing it.

Andy,

Is that an ebay number!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is a huge amount.. Is there anyone out there that might know the approximate number of mills grenades that were made overall?

At the Watford Arms fair there were two Mills bombs made into Ink wells and one made into a money box, the ink well ones were officially made for soldiers who were killed or injured and were mounted on a pottery base saying what they were sold in aid of

Jt,
thats the actual no of Mills grens that were made during WW1. It is not approximate, its the actual number.
