Many years ago, being the proud owner of my very first Mills, I showed it to a WW2 veteran, who asked if I was left handed; seeing that I was puzzled by the question, he said, " well, you have the pin in the wrong way round, if you're not!"..........
Dave - WW1 instructions showed the Mills could be held base plug UP and base plug Down. Also Bombers prepared their own bombs in most cases so could put the pin back in either way, before the det was inserted.
The WW2 veteran you spoke to probably had an instructor that only taught one way.
