Any ideas on this grenade and fuze?

So far I have that it is German and its from WWI (which I find hard to believe).

So I ask the masses.

I doubt that to be German WW1, at least I have not seen one yet, and the German WW1 grenades are pretty cut and dry........Dano

the body looks to me to be Austrian. I have never seen the fuze before. I am just going on the looks of the body. Good little mystery piece.

Joe,

I'm pretty sure it's a WWI period U.S. experimental, but can't remember the details. I should have something on it somewhere in the files. I'll look tonight.

no it is sitting at Aberdeen in the museum. But I'm sure if it wasn't it would be.

Rick is correct, its American, here is an article from the literary Digest dated August 31, 1918. A very interesting piece, and very rare.

Thanks Darryl,

I was looking for that article but couldn't find it. Here's another image of one more variation of that body. The photo came from a friend in California about 20 years ago and the grenade was thought to be a rifle launched version at that time.
