Hi Motiztab,

You have what is left of a 4.7inch British naval shell case. The missing markings are MKs XII & XII* guns. The * means modified. The seawater will have disolved the zinc from the brass leaving the copper colour that you see. I believe the original case length would have been around 703mm and was bottlenecked.

BD,

Thanks for the info. Zinc eh so that why the outer part looker copper colour yet the inside section looks more brass.
Interesting.

Thanks again

4.7 Naval

Burney Davis, interested in your comment re the MkXII case being 703mm long and bottle necked. Haven't seen a pressumably fixed, necked 4.7 when did these start in service? I know early WWII were SL and mk IX & IX* guns saw service from about 1934. The straight case fixed was in service in 1946. 2pr

John Campbell in Naval Weapons of WW2, states that the 4.7in MK XII & XII* were used on, among other vessels, Tribal, J, K & N class destroyers.

According to Campbell the case was 30.922in (785.4mm) long? I have no idea if thats accurate.

There was a fixed 4.7in (MK VIII) used on Rodney, Nelson, Courageous, Glorious, Albatross and Adventure.

Correction

Apologies 2pr and Q, I measured the wrong case in the half light!

Pictures of the case are below - length is 774mm and it isn't bottle necked.
