Mystery 30mm projectile.

I've had this one a couple of years, got it off e bay before the thought police arrived.
It is missing its cap and presumably was fuzed.
My query is what is it for? I've got a reasonable amount of 30mm rounds but have nothing with a driving band like this.
I believe its British (came out of one of the factories that shut a few years ago, was found in the back of a cupboard).
Dave.

Could it be an experimental capped proj for the 30mm HS.825? The only problem with that theory is that it only has one crimping groove.

Thanks, possibly, the crimping groove is strange also, its not the usual U shape but more a V shape.

Crimping groove !

David the crimping groove is that of an Oerlikon projectile (see attached pic) and being found in the back of a cupboard is where all the best things seem to come from :top:

Hi Dave,

Can you send me dimensions? Looks like standard APSE with ballistic cap and primer plug missing. Would not have been fused but relied on impact to ignite the composition.
Regards,
C.

Oerlikon v rarden

Charlie you may be correct in your thinking but the only APSE rounds I saw for the RARDEN were always fitted with the RARDEN type crimping groove (round) and Oerlikons own APSE I believe also shared this same radiused groove unlike all the HE/HEI/HEIT rounds ???

And isn't the body a little short for APSE with too wide a diameter thread ??? Just my pennies worth !

Agree with you Chris and sorry shouldn't have put standard in my last post. I ment standard as in it is a standard APSE and did not mean to relate to Rardens lol and havent had a chance to nip home and compare it with what i've got.
I always ask for dimentions and never go by a photo due to forums resizing them, it's amazing how easy it is to squash a projectile !
The groove intregues me, although can't comment until i've checked...

Measurements

Charlie measurements as follows:

Projectile length 74.10mm
Diameter below band 29.53mm
Diameter above band 29.83mm
Diameter measured over driving band 31.42mm
Depth of band 8.21mm
From base of projectile to base of band 17.02mm
Thread diameter 22.85mm
Depth of cavity 60.48mm (the internal cavity follows the contour of the outside)
Diameter of groove where cap would fit 26.08mm
Diameter of crimping groove measured inside groove 27.88mm
Length from place where cap fits to point 24.31mm
Thread extends 8.68mm into the base of the shell, thereafter no thread

Hope this helps.

Dave.

Apse.

I really should know this, but what does "APSE" stand for?

A.P.S.E. is as Dave states, this item is filled with Red Phosphorus and has no fuze in it as it relies on the heat generated by perforating the armour plate to ignite the filling-very spectacular smoke / flame burst on the inside/reverse of the target.
And the smoke can be quite choking too !
