Mystery Ammuniton Box

I have had this box for about 20 years and not been able to identify it. Its was found in the UK, is marked V.C.C 1942. It is embossed on the front with a small arms round! It will fit upto a 15mm Besa round but to small for 20mm. I thought it might be an early Spennymoor .50 box. I took it to an ECRA meeting a while ago and nobody had any specific Id ideas. Any ideas welcome.
