Hi all.. new to the forum and hope my first post is a winner..I have some wooden military boxes that need identifying..
The first is the grey squat box.. possibly of US origin. It measures 300 x 140 x 525 mm and is well made and solidly constructed.
It, along with others, were purchased in the late 1940's at Army surplus sales and contained all sorts of odds and sods. this particular box containing gas mask components.. lenses, nuts, clips etc.
A reused Australian Army tag tacked to one end of the box showed that at one stage it contained 1.3/4" steel clouts !!
It appears the handle on the top may have been a later addition.
The other box I picked up somewhere.. It measures 200 x 210 x 320.. lid was missing and someone had given it a nice gloss paint job.
I scraped off the topcoat in places and found some original markings but not enough remained to be legible.
only marking in the wood is "BOX A1" on the bottom.
Original colour was khaki.. this was over painted white with blue lettering and finally a thick gloss grey
Cheers Kenny
