Naval 4 inch Mk23 submarine case

picked this up today, a not so common 4inch Mk23 submarine deck gun case dated 1957. Mainly fitted to a few of the postwar built A & T class subs, they were mainly removed in the early 60s. All I need now is a correct 4 inch shell!! Dave

hi, its 13.75 inches in length. The headstamp reads '4 inch Mk 23 GUN, N1 over broad arrow, Lot 3, ECC 1957' Dave

Hi I remember working on 4" Mk23 HE Rounds late 70s early 80s

They where for issue to the Nigerian Navy

As far I can remember they were much shorter that the MK 16 Rounds

Rickoshae: Could you post a photo of the headstamp:

Radioman1: If the guns were removed from Submarines in the Early 60s, they may have been sold to Nigeria. That could be why the cases are not common in the UK.

one of the guns is on display at Explosions but I can't remember seeing any of the ammo there.

I imagine its the same as a normal 4 inch naval round with just a shorter case but I can't find anything on the net so am happy to be corrected. dave

Cant see why it might not have the std 4in shell, thats whats in mine but would like to be sure.
