Hello,
Your case is Italian. The model is 76/40, the manufacturer SMI: Societa Metallurgica Italiana and the date 917 is for 1917. What I find in the Hawkinson is a 76,2x441 case : 76,2mm/40 Ansaldo 1916 or 1917 for the Italian Navy. Very nice case.
Regards,
Dandebur.
At the 2016 St. Louis Cartridge Show I purchased from Robert Hawkinson, what was supposedly the last copy of the 2nd edition of his book.
But just in case here is the contact information (from IAA Journal Issue 489, Jan./Feb. 2013) for those who might want to see if copies of the 2nd edition are still available:
"A GUIDE TO THE IDENTIFICATION AND RESEARCH OF BIG BORE AMMUNITION
Second Edition , Copyright April 2012
After 19 years of research since the 1st Edition the 2nd Edition is finally here. With 280 pages that contain 3,391 case types, this is the largest reference of Big Bore Ammunition in existence.
Although there is no pictures, the lists provide numerous columns of information that can be easily used to identify case types.
Price is $100 US Dollars plus Shipping. Shipping to USA $10 USD. Shipping to most European Countries & World Wide minimum $30 USD.
