Just for intrest for you collectors of the L series smoke grenades,it would seem there is a new kiddy on the block
The L83A2 screening grenade with a larger smoke hole in the bottom of the can,
photo shows the 'new' L83A2 base with the 'old' L83A1 base, the only external diffrence(except the number) between the two.

Ah yes. Maybe have to have a look out for one next time I go out for a walk, though this weather would pretty much spoil them quick.
Any idea when these came into use? Must be very recent

MOD have been listing these items on their classifications database for over 12 months. The photo above on this thread shows a production date of 2009.

Hi
yes it is 2009 dated, but if SAA is anything to go by current issue use seems to be last years production? just starting to see 2010 dated ammo being used now.

Aaah, something else new to look out for........................
There seem to be a few 'A2' variants coming along now.

L84A2? coloured smoke if I remember correctly,the ones I can remember are;
L83-screening
L71-blue
L68-green
L69-orange
L70-red
L10-yellow
L101-purple

Would be intrested to know more about the L84(white???)

Heres a pic of my L84A1. Is a bursting type smoke filled with 100's of paper discs impregnated with red phosferous to give an almost instantaneous smoke screen. I think the idea of the discs it to stop the gren throwing out lumps of phosferous like the old No80 did. Mine had popped the base of rather than the body bursting which was lucky. anyone got a base they dont want?:tinysmile_fatgrin_t
