No. 119 L

What is the meaning of the ”L” on this No. 119 fuze?

I suspect that it is either a Mk. II or Mk. VIII. Both of these were made from Mazak, a zinc alloy and were lighter than their brass counterparts. Being lighter necessitated the use of different "Range Tables." The Mk II was to be marked with a white "2" on the body to identify it as being lighter, however an "L" for lighter would have been more appropriate, which is what they might have done for the Mk. VIII.

As TimG said - light fuzes. Ammunition Bulletins Item Nos 160 (December 1940) and 1264 (January 1945) refer:

Is the left fuze a brass one and if so why is it marked LL ? I understand the alloy fuzes being lighter.

it weighs 1.15kg, and I think thats about right for a no.119, still got these 2 L's painted on it, It was researched and the paint was determined to be from the same time/period the fuze was created.
