Question for the crowd on No. 12 base detonating fuze series:

What do the letters after the nomenclature stand for ... ie. No. 12 D IX

I know its a No. 12 Mark IX but don't know why they put a D is there.
I have also seen the letter F as well.

Any ideas?

Joe

I might have answered my own question ...

the NO 16 series has a NO 16D series of fuzes ... these fuzes were the same as the NO 16 but with a delay. Could this be the reason for the D? on the NO 12 series as well? I don't have any documentation to prove that theory ... thought I would throw it out there.

Joe

Joe,

You are correct in your theory that the 'D' indicates the incorporation of a delay.

'F' denotes that the creep spring has been replaced with one having a fifth strength of the original.
