I recently received this No. 39 Stewart grenade, can anyone tell me the meaning of the red and pink bands? Would this be a 39, or a 39M?

Red Band means its filled (well at least we hope its not any more) pink band filled with 1.5oz ammonal, alumatol. yours is the No39 Mk1, The No39M Mk1 would be marked with red Xs around the body and a green band denoting filling of trotyl, baratol 20/80. im very jealous......... Dave

Awesome grenade there! I'm not too jealous! :tinysmile_tongue_t: The red band is added to indicate it contains explosive, the pink band denotes which explosive, in this case Ammonal.

I couldn't tell you if its an 'M' or not,

Ben.

Millbomber beat me to it lol
