No 80 Fuze used on HE Shell

Although the No 80 fuze was initially designed for shrapnel shells, there was a problem when it was needed for an HE (as opposed to shrapnel) anti-aircraft shell. The gunpowder magazine at the base was not powerful enough to detonate the HE filling in the shell, and various alternative gaines were tried.

I’ve had this unstamped No. 80 fuze for many years and wonder what the ‘gaine’ was that caused the indents on the base of my fuze – ideas?
