No2 MK2

MG34NZ

Well-Known Member
Hi All,
Heres a No2Mk2 thats come out of the woodwork, can you advise me a bit on any aspects of this particular grenade as its not marked with Hales grenade/cotton powder company details only two "BA" stampings like the other examples I have on hand also the other ones I have feature black paint on the shrapnel ring.
The top section of the striker is missing so I will probably make a replacement

fantastic

That is a lovely condition grenade, thank you for showing it. Ive looked through my list of manufacturers but can't find a BA. Hopefully someone will be able to give you the info you require. One day ill get me one of these.

Ben.

by the colour of the frag ring i would say a drill grenade. i cant find BA either. i wonder if these were made in Australia or New Zealand under licence from the Cotton Powder Co ? A fine gren none the less.
cheers, paul.

Mine was made by BA also. It would be nice to think that it was NZ made, but I don't think we made any grenades during WW1. Cheers

In relation to the No.1 grenade, the 1915 treatise on ammunition states "the cast iron ring is painted yellow" so did they also paint No.2 rings yellow? And this one has faded to a cream colour?

Ben.

No 2

Brilliant Arc Lamp and Engineering Co Ltd.
Fragmentation collar was usually black.
Practice version collar painted off-white.
None made outside the UK as far as I am aware.

That is one SWEET grenade. Must have been hell to safely use it. WW1 had some one off patents and I myself think The First World War to be the single most period of grenade development than any other era ever. There were more off the wall (meant in a respectful manner) designs, many worked and many simply did not. Back to my original comment. That is one bitchin' grenade................Dano

Thanks for the information and positive comments guys,Ben its definately a faded cream colour and may have started life "white", Bonnex I have had the maker suggested by a couple of people and conclude that you are correct thank you.
Thanks also to Andy for the numerous pics and info via email on the No2 Mk2 and also the Gibbons I posted, much appreciated mate.

Regards

Hi,

The No2 I have has the same coloured ring as my No1. The paint is old and I suspect original. Cheers
