Ha ha, Nice one dan.
If you scroll your cursor over a pic on the internet and right click the mouse you can save the pic to your computer by clicking "save image as" a lot easier than photographing the screen.:tinysmile_grin_t:
Have a go and let us know how you get on
Cheers, Paul.

Nos 28 and 29 Gas Grenades

It's also a strange pic, isn't it !?

Normally this one must be a little more correct

Thanks. I know the example this photograph of a No 29 refers to. It was determined to be a 'replica'.

Nice to see some 28s. It may be of interest that Marks III & IV were developed at the end of, and after, WW1.

Just thought i'd bump this thread as its been almost 2.5 years since the last post and we have lots more members now.

Still looking for the elusive No 29 grenade.

Cheers

From Trench Warfare Supplies weekly progress report, week ending 2 June 1917:

"The demand (for No.29) is 504 for experimental filling. 48 empty have been sent to Filling Station and delivery instruction for balance are awaited."

Finally from Trench Warfare Design weekly report, week ending 30 March 1918:

"Chemical Grenades - Information has been received from the War Office that ten No.29 grenades have not been successful on trial in France. Further action with this design has therefore been suspended and it will be declared obsolete."

The numbers produced and used in the life cycle of the No.29 were therefore rather low. There might be a few casings still lying in the ranges at the back of Porton?

Tom.

Interesting information. Thanks.

Never found any at Porton, but that's not to say there isn't one lurking somewhere. Just got to find it!!!

I believe I did see the body of one at DEODS in the ID park during a brief visit in the late seventies. When I went there for a 3-week NATO course many years later the thing was nowhere to be found. I guess photos might have existed of the items that were in the training collection but the FFE registers are most certainly long gone.

What is equally surprising is that no photographs appear to be in the Nation's Archives of this war winning weapon. Tom and I and expect several others have spent a good part of our lives looking through MUN, SUPP and WO files and unearthed lots of useful documents and photographs but not one picture of the No 29 - not even a Mark II!

As you know Norman, the best i came up with was the technical drawing of it.
I have a French document with a photograph of what is identified as a No 29, but i think its more likely a No 16.

Ill dig it out and post it, see what others think.

Here's the picture i was talking about.
The grenade at position 70 is labelled in the attached text as the No 29 grenade.

Thoughts?

Cheers
