ww1 picture of soldiers from "classe 1889", so 45 years old in 1914 (they were assigned to guard railways)

Fantastic picture. Just look at those bayonets. Are they Berthier ? Also the posters on the wall behind them. I have a few of those old posters and they are a mine of information.

The top of the pommel shape is angled (not square cut) which appears to resemble more like a 20" French M1874 GRAS Bayonet than a Berthier type.

Hahaha OK, I just had look at the reference link - under this photo it states:

"Les hommes debout à chaque extrêmité portent les armes et équipements de faction : fusil Gras modèle 1874 avec sa baïonnette, ceinturon avec porte-baïonnette, mais ils portent aussi au ceinturon d'autres petits équipements :"

(The men standing at each end carry the weapons and faction equipment: Gras rifle model 1874 with its bayonet, belt with bayonet holder, but they also carry other small equipment with the belt

Excellent. I guess I should have looked at the actual bayonets in my collection first. Well recognised.
