Paint on M1916 Übungs-Stielhandgranate

This was originally purchased at the 2023 Stoneleigh militaria fair and it has literally taken me 3.5 years of intermittent effort to get the threaded ring to unfreeze and unscrew from the head. Now onto restoring it and something I can’t pin down is whether the threaded ring would have been painted red along with the head or left bare metal? It’s unpainted in most of the examples I can find pictures online and the one or two I can find with a painted ring look like they may be repainted.

Thank you both for the pictures. It looks like they were either left bare metal or painted field grey.
